Motorworld / carsetc.net

So I have my car listed in the Autotrader in print and online. It’s really the best place to sell your car. It is the biggest site and the Autotrader is sold everywhere. So on Friday I get a call from Motorworld / carsetc.net. I am told that they have a buyer for my vehicle who will pay full price if I pay a $150 finder fee.

Right away the scam bells are going off in my head. It sounds like every email lottery and foreign money transfer scam that is out there. As soon as some one says you need to pay money upfront to make even more money that’s the first sign that some thing is wrong.

So I take the guys name and number (Adam @ 1-877-207-4696) and tell him I will think about it. By think about it I mean research this on the internet. So this is the only hit I can find on this company:

http://forums.beyond.ca/

A sign that something is not right here. So I check out the Tony Tighe (local consumer reporter) reference:

http://www.canada.com/

Same idea different website… or is it? The two domains greatcarsandtrucks.com and carsetc.net are registered by separate companies and hosted by separate ISP’s.

But look at the two sites: greatcarsandtrucks.com and carsetc.net. They both use the same cheezy map and the ‘money back guaranty’ they both offer is exactly the same. If they really are separate sites one of these sites needs to sue the other for copyright violations.

The Motorworld / carsetc.net guy had another claim which is a bit fuzzy. They make reference to being in the Better Business Bureau. Well they are… sort of. Search the BBB site for ‘carsetc’ and ‘motorworld’. You will find two listings. Motorworld is a member since 2005 and has a clean record. Carsetc is NOT a member but is in the database. They have only been in the system since Jan of this year (2006). How long does it take for a complaint to get onto the BBB system?

So I get a second call on Sunday from another Motorworld sales guy. I was a bit charged up now so I forgot to get the guys name. He gives me the same pitch. This time I confront him with all of this information. I try my best to get him to confirm or deny that he actually has a buyer for my vehicle. He won’t. I’m pretty sure all I would be doing would be paying $150 to place an add on their site (which only has 800+ listings at the moment - hardly close to the Autotrader). I then point out that carsetc.net looks alot like greatcarsandtrucks.com at which point the sales guys hangs up on me.

I guess I had him on that one. If I was a reputable company and was entangled in a conflict with another shady company I think I would do what ever I could do to clear my name. I would even have gone as far as to give away a free listing / finders fee to build a customer base and have some references. I honestly would have no issue with paying a commission if they indeed have a buyer for my car. Bring me a buyer with a cheque, we will sign a purchase agreement and you get your cut - just like a real-estate deal.

Anyway I am looking forward to another call from these guys. I just wanted to post this so anyone who Googles on this will find some more info concentrated in one place. I can’t say for sure that this is a scam but when it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

16th kids… looking to have more!

Holy crap!

“Michelle Duggar just delivered her 16th child, and she’s already thinking about doing it again.

Johannah Faith Duggar was born at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and weighed 7 pounds, 6.5 ounces.

The baby’s father, Jim Bob Duggar, a former state representative, said Wednesday that mother and child were doing well.

He said Johannah’s birth was especially exciting because it was the first time in eight years the family has had a girl.

Jim Bob Duggar, 40, said he and Michelle, 39, want more children.

“We both just love children and we consider each a blessing from the Lord. I have asked Michelle if she wants more and she said yes, if the Lord wants to give us some she will accept them,” he said.”

Random Entry

I’m bored… I just needed a break. I wish I was Pat… he works at ATB. They got slammed by the latest Windows worm (see entry below). He’s at the mall now after being sent home.

I guess that’s the down side of having a Mac here at work for our email / fileserver…. it doesn’t crash or crippled by worms / viruses.

Tammy and I now have a new understanding… when I feel the need to rant I do it here rather than bore her on the car ride home. I joked to her today that soon she will have ‘blog’ written on her left palm so she can just hold that up when I start to ramble on. I never really know if people are really reading my blog or if the only ones ‘listening’ are all the search engines indexing my site.

Garage Sale 2006

Well we had our first annual garage sale this weekend. We made some pretty good money. Got rid of a bunch of crap and some decent stuff also. The highlights included:

- a young kid wondering what games my old school Motorola flip phone played
- the neighbor boy buying gifts for his mom’s anniversary
- the friendly people we basically gave stuff away to
- the rude people we made pay full price
- the guy I thought for sure was going to crack his skull test driving roller blades down our drive way

We also had a BBQ on Sunday night which went well (with our new 50,000 BTU/HR kick-ass BBQ) except for the rain. We all stood on the deck in denial as the rain poured down. Of course as soon as we finished dinner the sun re-apeared.

Norway sells out to the music industry

Norway plans to pass a law to make you a criminal (fines and jail time!) for ripping a CD you purchased to a MP3 player.

So much for fair under the copyright law.

I am sure I will be updating this entru soon saying tha the bill failed or was over turned. Why is digital music such an easy target? Why not make it illegal to record TV shows and movies… oh wait the TV and Movie industres tried that before!

Johnny Carson, 1925-2005

This is a great quote which sums it up:

With Carson’s passing, an entire generation of young adults have suddenly become Old. There’s an entire generation behind us that never saw “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” We will try — with embarrassing and dithering enthusiasm — to explain to them what it was like and we’ll fail. Completely. No doubt part of that’s because our childhoods are so deeply infused with memories of Carson and his show. The first time my parents and I were in the same room laughing at the same thing, we were watching The Tonight Show. That’s some powerful mojo, and it’s a memory shared by nearly everybody born before 1980.

This is quoted from Andy Ihnatko.

I remember many a night that I would sneak out of my room to the top of the basement stairs where I could manage to peak through the door to watch Carson well past my bedtime.
